Arms smuggling scandal hits Blackwater

The security contractor Blackwater USA has tried to take military aircraft out of Iraq and refused to give them back to the country.

Rep. Henry Waxman, chairman of the US House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, in a letter sent to Erik Prince, Blackwater's top executive, said he had learned that the firm tried to take at least two Iraqi military aircraft out of Iraq in 2005 and refused to give the planes back when Iraqi officials sought to reclaim them, according to the Associated Press.

Waxman also is seeking a sweeping amount of information about Blackwater's business, including its contracts with the federal government, profits made since the company was founded a decade ago, Prince's personal earnings since 2001, and details about the compensations paid to the families of Iraqi victims killed by Blackwater guards.

In addition to his letter to Prince, Waxman also sent letters to Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice seeking more information on Blackwater including investigative reports and any other documents related to the discharge of weapons and improper or unprofessional behavior by Blackwater personnel.

Blackwater guards opened fire on Iraqi civilians in Baghdad on September 12, killing 17 people and wounding 27 others.
